Guardianship / Kaitiakitanga

of our natural environment by and for our community for future generations

The Paraiti Catchment Care Group was established in May 2020 by the local community of Te Ranga, a district 15km southeast of the Te Puke township in the North Island of New Zealand. The Paraiti catchment is approximately 2,400 hectares, and is part of the wider 60,000ha Kaituna Catchment.  It is made up of Indigenous and Exotic forest, and the land use is pastural, horticulture and lifestyle blocks.

Paraiti translates to little (iti) disturbance (para) and the core value of the group is guardianship/kaitiakitanga of the natural environment. A starting focus of the group has been protecting the native forest within the catchment from pests and predators with hopes to increase native bio diversity.

Since forming, the Paraiti Group has been supported by and contains representatives from Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Westen Bay District Council, KEEP (Kokako Ecosystem Expansion Project), Kaharoa Kokako Trust, Tapuika Iwi Authority, Te Ranga School, Bay Conservation Alliance, NZ Landcare Trust and QEII National Trust.

Flight of the Kōkako Trail Run

On Saturday, 29th March 2025, journey through native forests and across farmland as you trace the path of the Kōkako. All profits will be dedicated to enhancing and expanding the trapping network, as well as planting native trees throughout the catchment, with the goal of establishing a corridor that connects the two kōkako populations of Kaharoa and Otanewainuku. Participants in this inaugural race will each have a native tree planted in their honour.
